The 15-minute meeting that’s worth £5 million

One of my companies doubled the revenue of another. Same product. Same market. The reason wasn’t what I thought.

I owned two companies in the same space.

Same product. Same market. Same opportunity sitting in front of both of them.

One did £10M that year. The other did £5M.

For a long time I was convinced the gap was talent. Then I was convinced it was timing. I floated the idea that one team had inherited the better client list. I told myself the other had a softer market.

None of it was true.

The only thing that separated those two businesses was discipline.

What the £10M company did that the £5M company didn’t

The £10M company had a daily huddle. Scorecards reviewed every Monday. A weekly leadership meeting that nobody moved. The MD blocked time every fortnight to sit one-on-one with each of his managers, and he didn’t cancel them when things got busy. He didn’t cancel them when things got slow either.

Their meetings were boring. Predictable. Sacred.

When something went wrong, and things always go wrong in a growing business, the team was already on top of it. Decisions came fast because nobody was scrambling to catch up. They didn’t need an emergency meeting because they were never far from the data.

The £5M company did all of it ad-hoc.

Meetings happened when projects were lost. Reviews happened when cash got tight. Conversations happened when the shit hit the fan. Everything was reactive. Everything was a fire.

They had the fatter pipeline, by the way. They just couldn’t move it.

We tried to install the cadence. Weekly meetings, scorecards, one-on-ones, the whole stack. It didn’t take. They’re still in the same place today. Growing, but every extra pound feels like blood from a stone. Every win feels like it cost them three.

The £10M company is still growing. Still calm. Still boring.

Then I saw the same pattern in a $2 billion business

Last week I was reminded of all of this.

A peer of mine runs an Outgrow programme inside a $2 billion company in the United States. He pulled the data on two of their branches.

Same brand. Same product. The same customers, literally the same customers, because the two branches are three miles apart and people stop at whichever one is on their way home.

Branch A runs weekly huddles. Branch B doesn’t.

Branch A is up 22% year on year. Branch B is down 11%.

That’s a 33-point swing. Three miles apart.

Same economy. Same market. Same buyers. Same brand.

The only variable is whether someone holds a 15-minute meeting on a Tuesday morning.

Same lesson at every scale

The shape of what I saw in my own portfolio years ago is identical to what my peer saw last week inside a billion-dollar business.

Discipline isn’t a personality trait. It’s a calendar.

The leaders who grow aren’t smarter, luckier, or better networked. They hold the meeting. They look at the scorecard. They have the awkward one-on-one. They do it on the slow weeks when nothing’s wrong, and they do it on the bad weeks when everything is.

The ones who don’t grow always have a reason. The market. The team. The product. The economy. The competitor.

It’s never the meeting they didn’t hold on Tuesday.

It’s always the meeting they didn’t hold on Tuesday.

Run this audit yourself this week

Pick your best-performing unit. Branch, team, rep, region — it doesn’t matter. Then pick your worst.

Compare them on one thing only: cadence.

Are the meetings actually happening? Are the scorecards getting reviewed? Are the one-on-ones on the calendar, or are they getting pushed every week?

You’ll have your answer before you finish your coffee.

You don’t need a consultant for this one.

You just need to look.
