Why Your Sales Pipeline Feels Like a Black Box
How tracking inputs instead of outcomes creates predictable revenue

Most founders track revenue the same way.
Leads generated. Meetings booked. Proposals sent. Deals closed.
And then they sit back and wait. Hoping the numbers move.
But hope isn’t a strategy. And these metrics? They’re lagging indicators. By the time they tell you something’s wrong, it’s already expensive.
That’s why so many founders feel like they’re reacting to their business instead of running it.
A great quarter followed by a quiet one. Revenue that spikes and dips. No pattern. No predictability.
I’ve seen this over and over again.
The Shift: Control the Controllables
You can’t control when a customer decides to buy.
But you can control what your team does every single day.
This is the core idea behind the Outgrow (opens in a new tab) methodology — a system used by 500+ companies, backed by over 100 million data points.
Instead of tracking outcomes, you track Actions.
An “Action” isn’t just a phone call. It’s a complete system.
Here’s what one Action looks like:
1. You make a proactive call to a prospect or existing client.
2. If they don’t answer, you leave a voicemail.
3. You follow up with a text.
That’s one Action.
It’s not about dialling more numbers. It’s about completing the loop.
Why Actions Work
Most sales teams stop at the first attempt. No answer? Move on.
But the data tells a different story.
When you complete the full Action — call, voicemail, text — 66% of people respond.
These aren’t cold leads. They already know you. You’ve just not spoken in a while.
And when you layer in a simple question on the call — “Did you know we also offer this?” — 20% of the time, they buy something.
That’s 1 in 5.
Every five questions your team asks could turn into revenue, a quote, or a follow-up conversation.
The system works. But only if someone makes sure it actually happens.
From Actions to Accountability
Knowing this isn’t enough.
Most teams hear about proactive outreach and nod along. Then nothing changes.
That’s because Actions need a target. A rhythm. Accountability.
Here’s how to make it work:
𝟭. 𝗦𝗲𝘁 𝗮 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗹𝘆 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁.
Pick a number your team can commit to. Say, 500 Actions across the team per week.
𝟮. 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗶𝘁 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝘆.
Make it a scorecard. Review it every week. Celebrate progress. Address gaps.
𝟯. 𝗟𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 “𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄” 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀.
Train your team to ask and stack multiple simple DYK questions on every call: “Did you know we also offer [X] or [Y] or [Z]?” - that’s 3 actions right there.
This isn’t selling. It’s helping. You’re reminding customers of value they might not know exists.
𝟰. 𝗔𝘀𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗮𝗹𝘀.
Once the relationship is warm, ask: “Who else do you know who might benefit from this?”
Most teams never ask. The ones who do grow faster.
The Mindset Shift
This isn’t just about process. It’s about belief.
Most salespeople avoid proactive calls because they think they’re bothering people.
They tell themselves:
- “If I call without an appointment, they’ll get upset.”
- “I should wait until I have something new to share.”
- “They’ll call me if they need something.”
That’s the voice of fear. And it kills momentum.
The truth is simpler.
They’re your customer. You’re calling to help them — not to bother.
When your team believes they’re adding value, they find a way to make the call.
When they believe they’re interrupting, they find excuses not to.
Mindset isn’t soft. It’s the foundation.
The Gift of Predictable Revenue
As go the inputs, so go the results.
There’s always a lag between the velocity of your Actions and the velocity of your revenue. But by systematically taking action, you’re not hoping for results. You’re engineering them.
You’re shortening the sales cycle.
You’re building the one thing most founders crave: predictability.
So here’s the question:
How many Actions did your team take last week?
Do you even know?
If you’re a founder looking to build predictable sales operating system that actually works, I write about this every week in my newsletter, PREDICTABLE.
